A Case of Pharyngeal Dysphagia due to Pharyngolaryngeal Varicella Zoster Virus Infection With Multiple Cranial Neuropathies

Herpes zoster is caused by reactivation of latent varicella virus (VZV). It may manifest as various clinical symptoms and signs depending on the cranial nerves (CNs) involved, especially in head neck region. Involvement CNs IX X VZV rarely reported compared to that CN V, VII, VIII. Here we describe a case infection pharynx larynx with multiple neuropathies (CN IX, X). A 70-year-old male complained odynophagia dysphagia, which was confined right side, followed ipsilateral facial weakness. Fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation swallowing showed residues at valleculae pyriform sinus, indicated pharyngeal dysphagia. After treatment an antiviral agent glucocorticoid, patient recovered fully.
